Originating in Japan and dating back to the 19th century, Netsukes are small intricately carved figures, generally of wood or ivory. They were used to fasten a sash to a kimono. Most have 2 small holes which a lace or leather strap was threaded through to hold the netsuke. These were worn as ornamental good luck pieces throughout the Orient.The fine carvings have become quite collectable and highly sought after. These minature works of art are made from a dark wood and most have small black stones inlaid for eyes. All these netsukes are between 1.5" and 2.5" in size. Each one is signed by the artist unless otherwise noted.
